Hamze Bytyçi was born in Prizren, Kosovo.
2003
His interest in film goes back to his acting training. He acted in the TV series “Tatort: Leyla” and in the documentary “Rosas Höllenfahrt“ by Rosa von Praunheim in 2009.
2005
He graduated from acting school in Freiburg, after a one-year theatre engagement in Zurich.
2006
He directed his first student film (Gyrbet – Where Is Home?).
2007
since 2007 - He moved to Berlin, where he has worked as an actor, director, theatre and media pedagogue among others at Ballhaus Naunynstraße, Theater im Delphi, Maxim Gorki Theater or in SAVVY Contemporary.
2012
He founded the multi-award-winning transcultural association RomaTrial which is active in the fields of art and culture, cultural and political education for young people and adults as well as advocacy and political work.
2012
He directed the documentary “Kiez-Monatsschau Vol. XIII”. In 2012, he was founding member of the International Romani Film Commission, a network of Romani filmmakers which existed until 2014.
2017
His short documentary “JOŽKA“ was selected for the grant “Oppose Othering” in the frame of the goEast Film Festival. In 2017, he founded the International Festival of Romani Film AKE DIKHEA?, which he has directed ever since.

2018 & 2021 - He was co-curator of the 1st and 2nd Roma Biennale, the self-organised biennale by and with Roma artists.
2019
Between 2019 and 2022, he directed nine animated short films about survivors and victims of the genocide of the Sinti and Roma, which complement the Memorial to the Murdered Sinti and Roma of Europe in the city centre of Berlin.

Since September 2022 - He is Artistic director of the “Grüner Salon” at the Volksbühne Theatre in Berlin.

Since October 2022 - He studies the Master Programme “Art in Context” at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). He is a board member of the neue deutsche Organisationen and a member of the CPPD – The Coalition of Pluralistic Public Discourse.

In 2022, Hamze Bytyçi co-founded the AVAZYA Film Professional Networking supporting Romani and BIPoC filmmakers.
